Removal and Cleaning of Nebulizer and Spray Chamber

  • Step 1

Note: This procedure is usually done when the instrument plasma is off and the Nebulizer is resting in DIW water after use.

    Removing the Nebulizer for cleaning.

Remove the Sample Capillary from the Nebulizer.

Loosen the nut connecting the Nebulizer Gas Line to the side arm and remove the Nebulizer Gas Line.

  • Step 2

Disconnect the sample line from the connector to the Nebulizer line. Remove the tubing from the carrier fluid vessel and the drain vessel.
  • Step 3

Label one 5 mL round-bottom tube and fill with 10% Contrad® detergent.

Lubricate one end of Tubing 1 from the Nebulizer Cleaning Kit.

  • Step 4

Connect the side arm of the Nebulizer to the syringe with Tubing 1.

With the Nebulizer tip submerged in detergent, pull slowly on the syringe plunger, filling the Nebulizer body with detergent. Continue until the syringe body is filled with detergent.

  • Step 5

Detach the tubing from the side arm and depress the syringe plunger to remove all the liquid.

  • Step 6

Attach Tubing 2 from the Nebulizer Cleaning Kit to the sample inlet and fill the sample inlet with detergent.

Remove the syringe and tubing from the sample inlet. Discard the detergent from the syringe and tubing by depressing the syringe plunger.

Repeat the previous procedure several times with Tubing 1 followed by Tubing 2, with DIW.

  • Step 7

Use the Nebulizer Cleaning Kit to fill the Nebulizer with DIW. Store in water until next use.

Note: If the Nebulizer is still clogged, soak it in a detergent bath until the clog dissipates.

  • Step 8

Removing the Spray Chamber for cleaning.

Slide the heat shield back and tilt the shield.

  • Step 9

Remove the ball joint clamp that secures the Spray Chamber to the Injector. Lift the clip on the side of the heater and open the heater box.

  • Step 10

Remove the Spray Chamber from the heater and loosen the makeup gas line from the Spray Chamber side arm. Remove the Nebulizer Adaptor plug from the end.
  • Step 11

Slide the heater (with heat shield) off of the guide pins and rest it on the upper support pins.

  • Step 12

    Spray Chamber cleaning procedure:

    1. Soak in 10% Contrad for 15 minutes.
    2. Scrub with glassware brushes (Fisher Scientific Cat. No. 06-710-498).
    3. Rinse with DIW.
    4. Dry thoroughly.

Note: Use a small amount of isopropanol to absorb water and use a blow dryer to quickly dry the Spray Chamber.
