FcεRI is a member of the multichain immune recognition receptor family and exists as a tetrameric complex (αβγ2). The α chain, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, contains the binding site for IgE but lacks intrinsic signaling ability, which is carried out by the β and γ subunits. FcεRIα is expressed on mast cells and basophils and up-regulated by the presence of IgE. The FcεRI complex plays an important role in triggering IgE-mediated allergic responses by causing the release of chemical mediators such as histamine. The MAR-1 monoclonal antibody reacts with the α subunit of the FcεRI complex.
