CX3CR1, also known as GPR13, is the receptor for fractalkine, a transmembrane chemokine. CX3CR1 is expressed on NK cells, some T cells, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and some epithelial cells. Expression of the chemokine receptor CX3CR1 is a hallmark of committed macrophage/dendritic cell precursors (MDPs), and variable expression of CX3CR1 has recently been used to identify distinct populations within the monocyte, macrophage, and dendritic cell lineages. Accumulating evidence indicates that CX3CR1-positive myeloid cells play an important role in a wide range of immunological maladies including colitis, burn healing, pulmonary vaccinia infection, central nervous system injury, liver fibrosis, ovarian cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
