The 2M2 monoclonal antibody binds specifically to β2-microglobulin, a 12 kDa nonpolymorphic Ig-like protein also known as β2M. β2M forms the HLA class I antigen complex through a noncovalent association with the 44 kDa α chain. β2M has a diverse expression profile and is found on all leukocytes, platelets, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells. β2M it thought to play an essential role in promoting antigen binding, in governing MHC class I molecule stability and in antigen presentation.
