CD49b, also known as integrin α2, is a 150 kDa subunit that binds noncovalently with integrin β1 (CD29) to form the receptor VLA-2. VLA-2 is a receptor for collagen and laminin. VLA-2 is expressed by some CD4+ T cells, intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL), NK cells, platelets, and epithelial cells. Evidence suggests that the collagen-binding VLA-2 can be a major regulator of T cell activation. It has been shown that co-expression of CD49b and LAG-3 identifies human and mouse T regulatory type I cells.
