TCRβ, together with TCRα, forms the heterodimeric T cell receptor (TCR) present on the surface of the majority of T cells and thymocytes. On the remaining 5% of T cells the α/β TCR is absent and is replaced by 2 alternate chains (TCR γ/δ). The complex of CD3 and TCR plays a key role in antigen recognition through binding to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), resulting in T cell activation.
