CD138, also known as syndecan-1, is a type 1 transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan. CD138 participates in cell proliferation, cell migration, and cell matrix adhesion. It is expressed on normal and malignant plasma cells, pre-B cells, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells. It is not expressed by mature B cells.
