CD1a is a 49 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein. It shares structural similarities with MHC class I proteins and is noncovalently associated with β2-microglobulin. CD1a is a member of the CD1 family of molecules in the immunoglobulin superfamily. CD1 molecules fall into two groups. Group 1 includes CD1a, CD1b, and CD1c molecules. Group 2 includes CD1d molecules and their homologs. CD1a is expressed on cortical thymocytes, dendritic cells, and Langerhans cells. CD1a plays a role in antigen presentation and has been implicated in thymic T cell development.
