The Oct-4 transcription factor, also known as Oct-3 and Oct3/4, is a member of the POU family with Oct1, Oct2, Pit-1, and unc-86. Oct-4 can be detected in pluripotent cells and some differentiated cell types in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. Oct-4 forms a heterodimer with Sox2, another embryonal transcription factor, to synergistically regulate expression of genes such as Nanog, Utf1, and Fgf4.
