CD31, or platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1), is a 130–140 kDa member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily. It is expressed at high levels at the lateral borders of endothelial cells and at a lower density on the surface of hematopoietic cells including T lymphocytes. By establishing homophilic interactions between endothelium- and leukocyte-expressed CD31, this protein has been shown to facilitate leukocyte transendothelial migration. CD31 deficiency in mice leads to elevated disease severity in experimental models of T cell-mediated inflammation including experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).
