The monoclonal antibody TS2/7 binds specifically to human CD49a, also known as α1 integrin or VLA-1 α chain. It is a 200 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein. CD49a binds with the integrin β 1 subunit (CD29) to form the α 1/β 1 heterodimer (CD49a/CD29) and serves as receptor for laminin-1 and collagen. CD49a is expressed on activated T cells, monocytes, neuronal cells, and smooth muscle cells. There is evidence that CD49a plays a role in cell attachment during development of the central and peripheral nervous systems.
