CD1d, also known as CD1.1 and Ly-38, is a 48 kDa type I membrane glycoprotein with structural homology to harmful MHC class I molecules. It is noncovalently associated with β2-microglobulin. Unlike MHC class I molecules that present peptide antigens, CD1d presents lipid antigens to natural killer T (NKT) cells. There are 2 types of NKT cells. Type I (invariant) NKT cells express an invariant T cell receptor (TCR) alpha chain. Type II NKT cells have a diverse TCR repertoire.
