The monoclonal antibody ASC-1 reacts specifically with human CD49c, also known as integrin alpha 3 or VLA-3 α chain. It is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is proteolytically cleaved into 2 disulfide-linked fragments weighing 125 kDa and 30 kDa. Integrins comprise a family of cell surface receptors that regulate adhesion between cells or between the extracellular matrix and a cell. Integrins are expressed on both hematopoietic and nonhematopoietic cells, and there are reports of their expression on cancer cells. Integrin-mediated adhesion can be regulated by a number of processes including changes in ligand affinity, changes in cell shape, integrin clustering, and integrin diffusion.
