The P1E6-C5 monoclonal antibody specifically binds to CD49b, also known as integrin α2 chain, VLA-α2, and GP1a. CD49b is a 170 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein and belongs to the integrin family of extracellular matrix and cell-cell adhesion receptors. CD49b is expressed across a range of cell types in the blood including platelets, activated T cells, B cells, and monocytes. CD49b is reportedly associated with neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia. CD49b deficiencies have been associated with hemorrhagic disorders. CD49b forms the VLA-2 complex (integrin α 2/β 1) through a noncovalent bond with CD29. Collagen and laminin act as ligands for the VLA-2 complex. The VLA-2 complex has been reported to regulate responses mediated by proinflammatory effector cells.
