Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) catalyzes the formation of nitric oxide from L-arginine through an NADPH- and oxygen-dependent mechanism. Different from other constitutively expressed NOS family members eNOS and nNOS, iNOS is transcriptionally induced in response to bacterial endotoxins such as LPS and proinflammatory cytokines such IFNγ and TNFα in macrophages and other cell types.
