IL-23 (p19) is a member of the IL-12 family of cytokines. It is constituted by 2 subunits, p19 and p40. IL-23 is secreted by activated dendritic cells and activated macrophages and functions in innate and adaptive immunity to regulate Th17 function and proliferation. Both IL-12 and IL-23 induce proliferation and IFN-gamma production by human T cells. While IL-12 acts on both naive and memory T cells, the effect of IL-23 is restricted to memory T cells.
