CD23 is a 45 kDa type II transmembrane glycoprotein, also known as Leu-20 and FcεRII. CD23 is expressed on monocytes, mantle zone B cells, mature B cells and follicular dendritic cells and at low levels on T, NK and Langerhans cells and platelets. B cell activation results in the up-regulation of CD23 expression. CD23 triggering results in release of proinflammatory cytokines in monocytes including TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6 and GM-CSF. CD23 can be proteolytically cleaved to generate soluble CD23, which has been reported to be biologically active.
