CD39, also known as ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 1 (ENTPD1), is an integral membrane protein with 2 transmembrane domains and exists as a homotetramer. It is found on subsets of activated T cells and B cells and on dendritic cells with weak staining on monocytes and granulocytes. Expression of CD39 is induced on T cells and increased on B cells as a late-activation antigen. CD39 can hydrolyze both nucleoside triphosphates and diphosphates and has ecto-ATPase activity.
