CD68, also known as macrosialin, is a 110 kDa protein that belongs to the sialomucin family, and it is closely related to the family of highly acidic, highly glycosylated lysosomal-associated membrane proteins (LAMPs). CD68 is predominantly an intracellular protein found in the late endosomal compartment, but it can also be detected in small amounts on the surface of myeloid-derived cells. The function of CD68 is not fully understood, but its structure suggests a role in antigen processing or presentation.
