CD23, the low-affinity receptor for immunoglobulin E (IgE), is a type II transmembrane protein and a member of the C-type lectin family. In mice, CD23 is detected on the surface of B cells, follicular dendritic cells, and the gut epithelium, and has been widely used in combination with other markers to differentiate between subsets during B cell maturation. It has been proposed that CD23 plays an important role in the negative feedback of IgE production in vivo. This is based on increased IgE levels in CD23-deficient mice and decreased IgE levels in mice overexpressing CD23.
