CD9 is a 24 kDa surface glycoprotein belonging to the tetraspanin (TM4SF) family. The family is characterized by 4 transmembrane-spanning domains and 2 extracellular domains. CD9 is known to play a role in platelet aggregation. CD9 is expressed in platelets, eosinophils, basophils, pre-B cells, activated T cells, and neural cell lines. In mice, CD9 is expressed in oocytes and CD9 deficiency results in sterility caused by defective gamete fusion.
