IRF4 is a 52 kDa transcription factor expressed in all stages of B cell development and in mature T cells. This transcription factor is inducible in primary lymphocytes by antigen mimetic stimuli such as Concavalin A, CD3 crosslinking, anti-IgM and PMA treatment. Together with TRF8, it plays an important role in macrophage and dendritic cell development and function. IRF4 is also shown to be essential for pre-B cell development, receptor editing, germinal center reactor and plasma cell differentiation.
