B cell-activating factor receptor (BAFF-R) is a 19 kDa type III membrane protein, also known as CD268. BAFF-R is expressed on mature B cells, B cell lymphoma, and T cell subsets. BAFF-R is one of the receptors for B cell-activating factor (BAFF), a member of the TNF family of proteins. BAFF is a key regulator for B cell differentiation and is critical in the regulation of survival and activation of peripheral B cell populations. Experiments in a mouse model have demonstrated that interaction of BAFF with BAFF-R promotes NF-κB activity. Overexpression of BAFF results in expansion of the B cell compartment and autoimmunity in mice.
