Syk is a cytoplasmic 72 kDa nonreceptor tyrosine kinase that plays an important role in intracellular signal transduction in hematopoietic cells. Syk is widely expressed in hematopoietic cells, including B lymphocytes, immature (CD4, CD8 double-negative and double-positive) thymocytes, and myeloid cells, epithelial cell lines, and normal breast tissue. The Syk kinase couples the activated immunoreceptors to downstream signaling events that mediate cellular proliferation, differentiation and phagocytosis.
