If wolves routinely stopped by the lab for a blood draw, monitoring for conservation research would be a simpler task. Since they don’t, scientists extract genomic data from fur, urine and other biological calling cards. In a 2014 study published in Molecular Ecology Resources, Robert Kraus and colleagues developed a SNP-based genotyping assay for tracking wolves using noninvasive samples. The study validates SNP genotyping as a viable alternative to standard microsatellite markers and highlights key advantages including predictable mutation modes, high genomic abundance and data that’s easy to share—a boon to global conservation efforts.
